Giant African Achatina (Achatina fulica) do not hibernate like grape and garden snails. The thing is that in their homeland (African countries) it is hot all year round, so there is no need to wait out the cold in a state of suspended animation.
In Europe, Achatina is bred in artificial conditions. At home, where the mollusk lives as a pet, or on the farm, optimal temperature conditions are maintained so that the snail remains active all year round.
In this article, we will talk about the nutritional characteristics and maintenance of this breed in the winter.
Temperature and humidity
With the arrival of cold weather for the Achatina, not entirely favorable conditions come. It gets cold at home in early autumn. Giant mollusks feel uncomfortable even when the thermometer is below 18 ° C. If the room is cool, turn on the heater or air conditioner to warm.
With the beginning of the heating season comes another problem — dryness. Ideally, buy a hygrometer from a pet store to monitor the moisture level in the shellfish. The easiest way to maintain a moist environment is to regularly spray the walls of your aquarium (or plastic container) with water.
Important! Even for these purposes, use purified water (filtered or drinking).
Despite the fact that the snail does not leave the apartment in cold weather, food during this period (as well as for humans) should become more nutritious, since external conditions affect the life of all living organisms.
As in summer, the diet is based on:
- vegetable food;
- animal proteins;
- mineral dressing.
There are significantly fewer fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs in winter, so it remains to be content with affordable seasonal products.
Among vegetables, these are:
- white cabbage;
- beijing cabbage;
The fruit diet consists of:
If you are freezing food for the winter, great. In this case, all useful substances are saved. Naturally, you need to give your pet food at room temperature, which has gone through the defrosting process according to the rules.
Important! Do not buy non-seasonal vegetables and fruits for your snail. There are a lot of nitrates, which are deadly for shellfish.
An increase in the amount of grain products will provide additional nutritional value to the diet:
Several ingredients can be mixed by grinding them in a coffee grinder.
Pet stores also sell vegetable flakes for fish, which are sometimes used in the diet of Achatina. Just do not buy a large bag, as not all snails agree to eat fish food.
Of course, you shouldn’t forget about minerals. Crushed eggshells (boiled in water for a few minutes) or a calcium stone will provide support for the mollusk’s body and the strength of the shell during the cold season.
The protein component is replenished with dry daphnia and gammarus purchased in the store.
Also remember put water. When dry, add water to your pet’s drinker more often. Let us remind you once again: use only high quality drinking water!
In the cold season, pay attention not only to nutrition. Take the Achatina in your arms more often. The warmth of your palms will remind an animal of its natural climate. In response to the care, the snail will happily crawl out of the shell and begin to study the owner.
